One wonderful mantra that we should not miss is the Mantra of Avalokitesvara/Kuan Yin.
It is stated that in the Dharani Sutra that " Those who recite and hold the Spiritual Mantra of Great Compassion will not suffer any kind of bad death and will obtain good rebirth" This mantra in Chinese is known as " TA PEI JOU"
Though as stated earlier the meaning of the mantra is not that important as the sound of each of the syllables, for the benefit of those who are really keen to find out the literal meaning of this mantra/prayer, here is the Sanskrit mantra/prayer and its English translation:
The Mantra of Avalokitesvara
1. NAMO RATNATRAYAYA
[ I take refuge in the Triple Gem]
2. NAMO ARYAVALOKITESHVARAYA
[ I take refuge in the Lord-seer ]
3. BODHISATTVAYA MAHASATTVAYA MAHAKARUNIKAYA
[ In the Enlighted Being, in the Great Being, in the Great Compassionate One ]
4 . OM SARVA ARBAYAH SUNADHASYA
[ Om, in the fearless one ]
5. NAMO SUKRTVEMAMA ARYAVALOKITESHVARAGARBHA
[ May I enter into the heart of the Lord Seer ]
6 . NAMO NILAKANTHA SIRI MAHABHADRASHRAME
[ I take refuge in Him with the blue neck, great abode of kindness ]
7 . SARVARTHASUBHAM AJEYAM SARVASATTVANAMAVARGA MAHADHATU
[ Meaning th fullness of understanding of all ways, which is pure, making all sentient beings victorious and purifying all the realms of existence. ]
